Double podium again in Spa
Aku participated in Trofeo Abarth Europe at Spa Francorchamps. The legendary race track with challenging weather changes is a must for every race driver. While Trofeo Abarth Italia is having a summer brake, it was a suitable time to visit Spa.
On Friday's free practise the track was wet, but drying. Therefore almost everyone went out on slicks and tried to stay on track. Aku finished second fastest, not bad at all for a first timer.
The qualifyings went also very well, Aku set the second fastest time for Saturday's race and pole for Sunday's! There was a peculiar incident during the first qualifying as Aku got a black flag. He drove to paddock and the officers just wanted to see Aku's license... Well, anyway a second place was not too bad.
Saturday's race was about to start and the Spa's quickly changing weather showed it's worst side again. Five minutes before the start the rain started. Luckily everyone was able to change to wet tires on the grid. After the start rain got even heavier and the race was really a struggle to survive. Several cars went off and even safety car visited the track once. Aku was able to stay on track and after the safety car pulled off, he even tried to overtake Alex Campani. However the conditions were so bad that he decided to go safely and finish the race on second place.
Sunday's weather was much better and there was no fear of rain. Aku started on pole and got a good start. He took the lead and kept it all the way until the last lap. Aku's Abarth started to vibrate badly when turning to left and Aku was not able to fight for the victory. So a second place again...
- I am very happy with the pace I had all the weekend. The first victory was close, but a technical problem is something the driver can't help. After all, we are ahead of our schedule for this season, so there is no reason to be unhappy. We have now time to have more tests and get the car even faster, told Aku after the race.
Aku's next race will be in Mugello at the beginning of October. Stay tuned!
